SAVE THE WORMS

SAVE THE WORMS

What?  Save the Worms?  What does that mean?  Give me a minute and I'll explain.

We're all familiar with "Save the Whales", "Save the Great Horned Owls", "Save the Planet" and so on... Sure, I want to save them all and from time to time I'll send a donation to support organizations like Greenpeace and other large scale movements that dedicate themselves to their specific "call".  I send the check and then what?  It makes me feel good and I know they're doing good work but it's not a tangible thing to me.  I don't really get immediate gratification or see any results where my money made a difference. Which whale did I actually save with my $25.00?

Which brings me to my topic of saving worms...
I walk my dog, RJ, almost every day.  He and I go out for 60 minutes, we have a good talk, well, I do most of the talking, and we enjoy our time together communing with nature.  There are days, after a good rain, when the road is scattered with worms that have somehow been transported from their cozy dirt homes onto the pavement and usually one of two things will happen to them....
Squish from a car or they become sun-dried remnants of their former selves.  Either way, it ain't a happy ending so as much as I can, I pick them up and throw them onto the lawn of the closest house. I can't save them all so I focus on the biggest ones that are easiest to pick up and unfortunately I have to leave the rest to their fate.
Saving those worms actually makes me feel great.  It may be gross and yucky, but I made a difference in that worm's life and I could see it and feel it immediately. The worm has no idea what just happened but it lives another day and it has me to thank for its survival.
This is a wonderful metaphor about doing good on a local level.  Don't just "send a check"(although that's a good thing too!) Go roll up your sleeves and work at a community food bank that feeds the homeless, become a Big Brother or Big Sister to mentor a kid in need of stability in their life, volunteer at the local animal shelter or organize an "adopt a Grandparent" program to help shut-in seniors feel less alone.  These types of community service will give you immediate gratification, they'll fill your hearts with joy and they'll bring you together with like minded people willing to put in the effort to make the world a better place.
Even if you don't start picking up worms, we'd like you on our team!!  We'd love for you to be a part of our efforts to spread the word that Life's A Team Sport.  10% of the profits when you purchase our products will go to charity. So reach out to us and share how you're making the world better.  Tell us about your organization, foundation or local charity and perhaps we can team up and Journey Together to send the message loud and clear that Life's A Team Sport and we'll support your efforts!
Peace,
Mitch
